We will explore how Blended Learning can support the complex differentiation needed to accelerate the achievement of English Learners. Rebecca Tomasini, Founder and CEO of The Alvo Institute, and former ELD teacher, will share how to infuse Blended Learning methods to provide EL students with dynamic, personalized instructional activities and teachers with detailed, real-time insight into student progress.

After a overview of the diverse BL options for an EL classroom, participants will choose from a variety of hands-on activities like creating personalized play-lists, using online programs to help students develop their speaking and listening skills, how to create a dynamic array of instructional classroom stations, and how to use dynamic e-reader platforms that can help English Learners acquire English while at the same time learning the academic content that my be beyond their EL skill level. NextGen teachers need NextGen leaders able to support a very different school culture. Teachers who successfully incorporate Blended and other innovative NextGen instructional designs into their classrooms, use a highly iterative process of small, frequent modifications, reflection, refinement and collaboration, but many educational systems are not set up to incentivize or support teachers as innovators. How can school and district leaders develop school cultures in which collaboration and innovation explicit, supported and encouraged? Learn about how educational leaders create innovative cultures where “failures” are celebrated, collaboration and play leads to the most unlikely solutions and reflection and regular collegial feedback loops fuel refinement. In this workshop, through video exemplars, case studies and lessons learned from educational leaders, participants will explore how to enable the innovator’s mindset as their faculties and teams explore and implement NextGen instructional models.

Individual teachers can begin to pilot Blended instruction in their classrooms even if their school is not ready to take on a school- wide implementation. In fact, it is often through the innovations in a single classroom that inspire more wide scale change.

In this workshop we will share some practical, manageable, ways teachers can try aspects of a Blended model in their classrooms. After taking a short survey, participants will receive a customized report that compares their current practices and beliefs to the skills needed to facilitate a great blended classroom. From there, we will share video examples and other forms of classroom implementation inspiration to help participants use their customized reports to identify what parts of their current practice support Blended Learning and where they might want to deepen their skills. Teachers will leave the workshop having identified practical skills, concepts and strategies they can try in their classroom.

Will you use Blended to support competency-based learning, project based learning or another method?

With guidance from the facilitators participants will learn how to conduct a variety of readiness assessments, ask the critical “getting started” questions, use and develop a project plan, risk/mitigation plan with a collection of Alvo created templates designed to support the design and launch of a blended program. Participants will also be able to work in small groups, interacting with facilitators and their peers, while engaged in real scaffolding and action planning for their school.
